Over the years, Zimbabwean Universities, with all the sanctions biting, against all odds, participated in regional and international competitions, often bringing home the top prize.
The latest is the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Mooting Program Law Faculty Team 2024, who won the National Moot Court Competition on 15 October 2024 at the High Court, Harare, and then on 8th November 2024 won the Trophy of Champions of the week-long 23rd All Africa International Human Rights Law Competition in Nairobi, Kenya!
Team leader Rutendo Sarah Gukwa (22) 3rd year, is with Nyasha Bhuza (23) final year, and Munyaradzi Musarurwa (23) final year.
The Team support is:
Coach/Chaperon Ashley Muza of Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Harare,
Adv. Tazorora Musarurwa, son of Willie Musarurwa, a long standing National Hero leader in the Liberation War and one of Zimbabwe's finest journalists and editor of the Sunday Mail,
Gina Mabwe, Legal Professionals Advocate and Munya’s Uncle,
Mr Melusi Majojo and Mr Lincoln Majogo provide training.
Munyaradzi Musarurwa (Munya) is Ambassador/ZimPI Network Team member, FairGo4Kids Trust (founded by Eng. Jim Holland), the Boy Child Project Partnering the Girl Child Initiative, and is founder/President of the Zimbabwe Students Commonwealth Lawyers Association, an affiliate of the Young Commonwealth Lawyers Association.
In 2023 Munya travelled to Goa as Zimbabwe Delegation member with Mentor/Chaperon, Commissioner Jessie Majome, member of the ZimPI Advisory Committee for the 23rd Commonwealth Lawyers Association Conference when Brian Speers concluded his second and final term as President of the CLA.
Brian Speers was invited to Zimbabwe in the ZimPI Network Team International Solidarity Visitor’s Program several times to build a mutually rewarding and enduring working relationship with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Zimbabwe. He introduced CSOs to the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles 23 years ago now, outlining the Separation of Powers and Inclusion of CSOs in decision-making. It is to the Zimbabwe Information Centre (ZIC), Sydney Australia, a ZimPI partner, who have enriched the marginalised communities in Zimbabwe as well as opened up opportunities for the young such as Munya to see the other side of the world, self-develop and empower themselves to such international heights as this Moot prize.
Munya was one of the speakers at the Hollands in a Garden Party welcome for the guest of honour Associate Professor and former Ambassador Matthew Neuhaus, distinguished legal persons such as Muchadeyi Masunda who chaired that welcome and others in discussions on the inter-generational way forward in Zimbabwe.
